October Sky Festival
October 18, 2025
Every fall, the town of Oliver Springs turns out to celebrate their heritage of coal mining, railroads, and the mineral springs that drew thousands of people at the turn of the century. The coal mines and mineral springs are gone, but the reclamation of the mines into trails now draws thousands of OHV and bike riders to this mountain community set between the historic towns of Oak Ridge, Clinton, and Petros.
Why do they call is October Sky? Well the movie October Sky was partially filmed in this portion of Appalachia, to represent Homer HIckman’s hometown of Coalwood, WV.
