'Race for the Cannon' - Experience Bluegrass, BBQ and whole lot of endurance.
Saturday, August 25, 2012
Triathlon begins at 8 am, 58 Landing Park, Kingston
Festival begins at 11:30 am, Fort Southwest Point, Kingston
The ‘Race for the Cannon' begins at 8 am when more than 100 athletes dive from the 58 Landing pier into Watts Bar Lake when the cannon fires. They will then swim almost one mile, returning to 58 Landing to jump on their bikes for a nearly 25-mile ride down River Road, turning around at the old Luminary Methodist Church. Lastly, they run six miles to Ladd Landing and back to cross the finish line at Fort Southwest Point.
Athletes are expected to cross the finish line between 11 am and 12 pm. All the festivities will be held at Southwest Point, with live music beginning at 11:30, along with barbecue, hot dogs, funnel cakes and snow cones. Costumed re-enactors will give interpretive tours and demonstrations inside the fort - and be warned, there are plans to fire the cannon, not only to start the race but also as the last runner crosses the finish line.
